Firefighting at Chornobyl NPP suspended, radiation background normal

Firefighting at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Chornobyl NPP) has been suspended, but it has not yet been completed.

The State Agency of Ukraine of on Exclusion Zone Management has reported this.

"As of 7 a.m., firefighting has been suspended, but this does not mean its completion. No open areas of membrane smoldering have been observed, the situation is being monitored using a UAV with a thermal imager," the report says.

It is indicated that six workers and two units of SESU equipment are currently involved. The air temperature in the morning was -15°C.

"No deterioration in the radiation situation at the industrial site of the New Safe Confinement-Shelter Structure and at the Chornobyl NPP SSE in general has been recorded. No release of radioactive products beyond the established limits has been detected," the agency added.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, there is a possibility of a leak of radioactive materials after a drone strike launched by the army of the aggressor country russia on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Recall, on the night of February 14, a russian strike drone attacked the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The drone was equipped with ammunition with a high-explosive warhead.

As a result of the attack, the building of the New Safe Confinement was damaged, and a fire also broke out. The fire was quickly extinguished.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the russian drone was flying at an altitude of 85 meters. Because of this, it was not detected by the radars of the Ukrainian air defense system.
