Natalia Borzykh: "ReabiCenter will become a modern platform for providing effective rehabilitation"

Lviv brought together rehabilitation and healthcare experts for the third time — 120 speakers from around the world and more than 1000 participants took part in the 3rd National Congress of Physical Rehabilitation and Medicine.

During the event leading specialists from Ukraine, the USA, Canada, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Israel, Latvia and Lithuania shared their experiences in working with patients with the consequences of combat injuries. The congress is very important because now in Ukraine there is a critical shortage of specialists for the formation of multidisciplinary teams in order to provide quality rehabilitation care.

"In the conditions of war, rehabilitation reaches a new level and due to its importance it is a full-fledged component of the medical and diagnostic process, without which it is impossible to achieve the most desired final result. In my opinion, the world practice of creating rehabilitation departments within the hospitals has the highest efficiency, especially for the wounded with severe limb injuries, because it is these patients who need multi-stage reconstructive and restorative treatment and the interaction of a multidisciplinary team," noted Natalia Borzykh, the head of the rehabilitation department, a traumatologist-orthopaedist, a PM&R doctor. The Doctor of Medical Sciences presented a report "Problematic issues of restorative treatment of the wounded with limb injuries in the department of trauma-orthopaedic rehabilitation."

Natalia Borzykh noted that her colleagues — specialists of the Rehabilitation Clinic of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine — have experience in the rehabilitation treatment of the wounded since 2014.

Today the renovation of the rehabilitation department at the Institute has begun as a part of the "ReabiCenter" initiative of Oles Dovgiy. The goal of the initiative is to make physical rehabilitation more accessible due to increasing capacity and modernization of existing medical spaces where male and female defenders of Ukraine receive treatment. According to the organizers’ plans, in the first half of 2024 a new space for the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers will appear at the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, which carries out surgical treatment and rehabilitation of the wounded with combat injuries in inpatient conditions. Due to this project the Institute will be able to carry out rehabilitation for almost 1000 wounded per year, including outpatient treatment.

The implementation of the project is enshrined in a tripartite memorandum between the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the "Mozhemo Razom" Charitable Foundation of the Dovgiy Family.
