Yaroslavsky Gives Kharkiv Another Monument

A monument to the classic of Ukrainian literature Petro Hulak-Artemowski who headed Kharkiv University from 1841 to 1849 was opened in the city.

Oleksandr Yaroslavsky, owner and president of DCH Group, key investor of Kharkiv Region and, among other initiatives, of hosting Euro-2012 here, has sponsored creating the monument.

During the unveiling ceremony, president of Kharkiv National University Vil Bakirov addressed the meeting and reminded everyone about Petro Hulak-Artemowski’s contribution to Ukrainian culture, science and education progress.

“Today we are commemorating one of the brightest, one of the most outstanding professors of our University,” stressed Vil Bakirov.

“The sculptor produces an idea. But for the idea to transform into reality we needed efforts of people who would support it. And we found the man. This is a member of the Supervisory Board and Kharkiv businessman Oleksandr Yaroslavsky, and due to his efforts we are now unveiling this monument, ” said Vil Bakirov.

The president of the University handed a letter of appreciation and a bronze reduction of the monument over to the vice-president of DCH Olena Derevyanko. In her turn, Ms. Derevyanko pointed out that Yaroslavsky’s DCH Group is systematic in its efforts to support academic institutions of Kharkiv.

“It is Mr. Yaroslavsky’s priority to strengthen intellectual assets of Kharkiv, to enhance the city’s reputation of being the intellectual capital of Ukraine, of the world-class city”, said the vice-president of DCH.

It is necessary to stress that it is not the first initiative of DCH Group’s owner on supporting and promoting Ukrainian culture and science. Last year Oleksandr Yaroslavsky backed erecting the monuments to the Nobel Prize winners who studied and worked in Vasyl Karazin Kharkiv National University. Before that, the businessman had also supported the project of eternalizing the memory of historian Dmytro Bahaliy and mathematician Oleksandr Lyapunov. Due to the businessman’s efforts, computers were installed in one of the classrooms of Kharkiv State University of Nutrition and Trade last month. Besides, Oleksandr Yaroslavsky signed memorandums of strategic partnership with Kharkiv National University and with the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” on behalf of the Kharkiv Tractor Plant, a DCH Group enterprise.
