President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has registered a draft law at the Verkhovna Rada envisaging that Ukrainians can be deprived of Ukrainian citizenship if they voluntarily take citizenship of foreign states.
Member of Parliament Artur Herasymov, the representative of the President at the Verkhovna Rada, announced this to the press, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Today, March 13, the President has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law, which is defined as an urgent one, addressing the problem of dual citizenship... The draft law will make it clear that a person who voluntarily takes citizenship of another state is deemed as a person who falls under the requirement for cancellation of Ukrainian citizenship," he said.
MP Herasymov notes that the draft law will not apply to residents of Crimea annexed by Russia.
Foreigners who take Ukrainian citizenship can be deprived of it if they fail to surrender passports of foreign states within a time set by the law.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Member of Parliament Oleh Liashko and other nine MPs have registered a draft law to deprive MPs mandates for dual citizenship.
