Sberbank Disproves Allegation Servicing Clients Holding DPR, LPR "Passports"

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman hopes for a swift reaction from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) and the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) when the information about Sberbank financing militants has been confirmed.

He said this during a Government session, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

They are finding out if the financial institution really has started servicing clients holding "passports" of the terrorist organisations "Donetsk People's Republic" (DPR) and "Luhansk People's Republic" (LPR).

"If this is so, the NBU and the NSDC will react quickly and the response will be adequate. This is inadmissible," the PM said.

Groysman thanked Internal Affairs Minister Arsen Avakov for raising the important question of the presumable financing of militants by Sberbank.

At the same time, Sberbank disproves the allegation that it has embarked upon servicing clients holding "passports" of the terrorist organisations "Donetsk People's Republic" (DPR) and "Luhansk People's Republic" (LPR).

A spokesman for the bank's press service announced this in response to a request from Ukrainian News Agency.

"Sberbank PJSC is Ukrainian commercial bank and operates under NBU Licence, strictly observes standards of Ukrainian law. The bank was not, is not and never will be servicing corporates or individuals on basis of documents issued in the non-government controlled areas, and neither performs transactions in these areas," it reads.

Sberbank services clients solely on the basis of documents that identify them in accordance with the requirements of the Ukrainian legislation.

The financial institutions sticks to the FATF recommendations and resolutions of the National Security and Defence Council and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency reported, on March 7 it transpired that Sberbank of Russia proceeded to servicing clients at its branches upon presentation of "passports," handed round by terrorists in the non-government controlled areas.

Internal Affairs Minister Arsen Avakov then demanded the NBU to impose sanctions in respect of Sberbank's subsidiary in Ukraine.

On the same day, the central bank initiated imposition of corresponding sanctions by the NSDC.
