The emergency measures on the electricity market require reactors at nuclear power plants to switch to operation in a weekly load-following mode.

Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Ihor Nasalyk stated this at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers while presenting a draft resolution on introduction of a state of emergency on the electricity market, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Paragraph 3 stipulates that Energoatom will adhere to the power-system load curve and enter into a weekly - not daily, but weekly - operation of power units in the load-following mode," the minister said.

Nasalyk also said that the energy system will go into manual control and price bids will not apply to the thermal power-generating sector after introduction of a state of emergency on the electricity market.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Energoatom stated in September 2016 that it considered the Ukrenergo national power company's proposal to introduce operation of reactors at nuclear power plants in a weekly load-following mode during the coming winter impossible and inadequate.

Energoatom's President Yurii Nedashkivskyi said that for power units to begin operating in load-following mode and that it was necessary to implement a range of measures and prepare and approve grounds for the safety of such mode operation.

According to him, the company has already started working in this direction.
