Justice Ministry Claims It Has Evidence Russia Began Active Preparation For Crimea Occupation In 2013

The Ministry of Justice has evidence that Russia began active preparation for the occupation of Crimea in 2013.

Minister of Justice Pavlo Petrenko announced this at a press conference, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Russia prepared for the seizure of Crimea and the active phase of the process began in 2013," he said.

Petrenko stressed that evidence of the relevant actions by the Russian Federation have been gathered.

"This is confirmed by the fact that Russia increased its military contingent in Crimea... This is confirmed by the fact that they conducted subversive and intelligence work in Crimean local government agencies. This is documented, we know the names of the Russian government officials that coordinated this special operation before the revolution and before formal hostilities," said Petrenko.

According to him, it is also documented that Russia brought fuels and lubricants, weapons, and vehicles for 'Crimean self-defense' activists to the peninsula on its warships between late 2013 and early 2014.

In addition, according to Petrenko, the Ministry of Justice has included this evidence in the lawsuits that Ukraine filed against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights.

The Cabinet of Ministers' authorized representative at the European Court of Human Rights Ivan Lischyna said that Ukraine has filed a total of five lawsuits against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights and that it is currently preparing another lawsuit related to the illegal ban of the Crimean Tartar Mejlis.

According to him, the European Court of Human Rights is currently determining whether it has jurisdiction over these cases.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the parliament has said that the temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol began on 20 February 2014.
