President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko insists that elections in Donbas without withdrawal of the Russian troops are impossible.

President Poroshenko gave the position at a joint briefing with Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras commenting on the recent statement made by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine Ernst Reichel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"As for the statement by the Ambassador… Holding elections in the occupied territory under the presence of foreign occupational troops is firmly and absolutely impossible," President Poroshenko said.

The President of Ukraine emphasized that it was not correct to compare the occupation of eastern Ukraine by the Russian army and the situation in the German Democratic Republic.

"One thing is when foreign troops are present with the consent of the receiving state. We can draw parallels with the Russian base in Sevastopol - we have been holding elections many times when Russian troops have been present in Sevastopol with the consent of Ukraine. And it is totally inadmissible when the occupational troops will try to promote the elections under the muzzles of machine guns," said President Poroshenko.

The President of Ukraine noted that the illegal referendum in Crimea held under the presence of dozens of thousands of Russian troops did not meet the legislation and was inadmissible.

"Holding elections under the presence of troops is similarly impossible. The security component, which is included in the roadmap on the settlement of the situation with Russian aggression, is one of the main conditions. And the withdrawal of Russian troops is a prerequisite," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin says the statement by Ambassador Ernst Reichel aboiut the elections in Donbas will not affect the relations between Ukraine and Germany.

Ambassador to Ukraine Reichel said in an interview for a Ukrainian internet paper that "it is not compulsory that the elections in Donbas will be only when there are no Russian troops or when the Ukrainian flag is over each of city administrations."
