Interior Ministry: Journalist Sheremet May Have Been Murdered Based On Orders From Russia

The Ministry of the Interior Affairs believes that journalist Pavel Sheremet may have been murdered based on orders from Russia.

Minister of Interior Affairs Arsen Avakov announced this at a news briefing, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Investigators are not ruling out the version of political assassination, the contract for which came from the Russian Federation," he said.

Avakov added that not long before his death, Sheremet met with former minister of revenue and duties Oleksandr Klymenko in Moscow to discuss his appointment as the editor-in-chief of Radio Vesti.

According to Avakov, Sheremet was dissatisfied with the outcome of the meeting.

Avakov said that the murder of the journalist has a number of similarities to the organization of the murder of Parliamentary Deputy Anton Heraschenko of the People's Front faction.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Sheremet was killed on 20 July 2016 when the vehicle in which he was traveling exploded in downtown Kyiv.

Ukraine asked the United States' FBI and German law enforcement agencies for assistance in investigating the crime.
