The headquarters of the antiterrorist operation (ATO) confirms the death of the commander of the Somali battalion of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" Mikhail Tolstykh, also known as Givi, in Makiivka, Donetsk region.
Spokesperson of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine Oleksandr Motuzianyk for ATO matters has told this at a briefing, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
He said Givi had been taking active part in the fighting against the forces of the antiterrorist operation since spring 2014.
The ATO headquarters accuses Givi of shelling residential areas, tortures of prisoners of war, crimes against civilians and pillaging.
The ATO headquarters says the Somali battalion suffered heavy losses in the fighting outside Avdiivka, Donetsk region, in January and February 2017.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Wednesday the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" announced death of Givi as a result of a "terrorist attack" in Donetsk.
