Prosecutors have handed to a court an indictment against Ihor Plotnytskyi, the "head" of the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic," accused of involvement in downing of an Il-76 plane in Luhansk in June 2014.

The press service of the Dnipropetrovsk regional prosecutor's office announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The indictment also addresses two commanders of battalions A. Petrushev and A. Hureyev.

They are accused of committing a crime described in article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act).

The statement reads that prosecutors have established that Plotnytskyi, who was the commander of an illegal armed formation called "Zarya", together with his deputy Petrushev and Hureyev, then the commander of an illegal armed formation "Vitiaz", were involved in downing of the Il-76 place with 49 servicemen aboard in Luhansk. All 9 crewmembers and 40 servicemen of the Ukrainian army died.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on 31 August 2016, the Kyiv Podilskyi District Court authorized commencement of the trial of Ihor Plotnytskyi, the "head" of the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic," in absentia.

Plotnytskyi is accused of committing a terrorist act and kidnapping and abducting Nadia Savchenko, then a senior lieutenant of the Ukrainian Armed Forces of Ukraine, in 2014. Nadiya Savchenko is a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada (independent) at present.
