ECHR Takes For Consideration Lawsuit From Communist Party of Ukraine Regarding Ban On Participation In Elections

European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has accepted for consideration a lawsuit of the Communist Party of Ukraine against the ban to participate in the elections in Ukraine.

The press service of the Communist Party of Ukraine announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The statement reads that the Communist Party of Ukraine sent the complaint regarding the participation in the elections to ECHR in July 2016.

The Communist Party of Ukraine challenges lawfulness of the actions of the Justice Ministry of Ukraine and Ukrainian courts.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, a court banned the Communist Party of Ukraine on December 16, 2015. In July 2015, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine banned Communist Party, Communist Party (updated) and Communist Party of Workers and Countrymen from taking part in elections of all levels under the Law of Ukraine "On condemnation of communist and national-socialist (nazi) regimes and ban on propaganda of their symbols."

The Amnesty International human rights organization considers the ban of the Communist Party of Ukraine as weaken dissent in Ukraine.

Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko says the court ban of the Communist Party of Ukraine meets European standards.
