President Petro Poroshenko has signed into law the bill establishing the High Council of Public Justice (HCPJ).
The press center of judicial power announced this on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
No other details were disclosed.
The HCPJ shall be established through a reorganization of the High Council of Justice.
It is empowered to dismiss judges, send recommendations to the President for appointment of judges, to discipline judges and prosecutors.
The HCPJ also can strip judges of immunities if suspected of criminal offences.
The HCPJ will be also appointing and dismissing the chairman of the State Court Administration, his deputies, and leaders of the Court Guard Service.
The HCPJ is made up of 21 members: 10 elected by the congress of judges, two are appointed by the President, the Verkhovna Rada, the Bar Congress, the pan-Ukrainian conference of prosecutors, and the congress of representatives of higher law education establishments and academic institutions each.
Chief of the Supreme Court is a member of the HCPJ by virtue of his position.
The Council's decision can be challenged only at the Supreme Court.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Deputy Chief of the President's Staff Oleksii Filatov predicts that the law on the High Council of Public Justice will have taken effect before January 1, 2017.
21 December 2016, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law establishing the HCPJ.
