U.S. Vice President Biden And IMF Managing Director Lagarde Welcome Nationalisation Of PrivatBank

Vice President of the United States Joe Biden and Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde welcome the decision to nationalise PrivatBank.

Ukrainian News Agency learned this from a statement made by the presidential press service following President Petro Poroshenko’s phone calls with Biden and Lagarde.

“The U.S. Vice President praised the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to nationalise PrivatBank. It was stated that it was a courageous and necessary step that demonstrated Ukraine’s determination and commitment to the implementation of reforms,” it reads.

The pair also coordinated actions on the support for Ukraine in the context of the programme of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund.

The President informed the U.S. Vice President on the situation in Donbas, particularly the armed attack in the area of Svitlodarsk, arc engineered by Russia.

Biden condemned the lasting provocations and attempts of militants to aggravate the security situation in the Donbas.

Also, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde expressed support and and welcomed the decision to nationalise PrivatBank.

“Lagarde praised the decision to nationalise PrivatBank, an important step towards recovery of Ukraine’s banking system. The IMF Managing Director noted the measured and resolute steps taken by the Ukrainian government, particularly Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeriya Hontareva in this matter, crucial for preservation of public trust and stability of the banking system,” it reads.

The parties discussed the process of consideration of the draft national budget for 2017 and prospects of its adoption. They also coordinated efforts on the development of further interaction between Ukraine and IMF under the extended funding programme.

The parties agreed to have a bilateral meeting in January 2017.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, G7 (USA, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan) Ambassadors in Ukraine welcome the decision to nationalise PrivatBank.

The Cabinet of Ministers on December 18 decided to nationalise PrivatBank.

The bank was taken into provisional administration on December 19 for three days.

After that the bank will be nationalised through conversion of the domestic-loan government bonds issued by the Ministry of Finance into the financial institution's capital.
