The Verkhovna Rada has allowed servicemen to break contracts during an anti-terrorist operation (ATO) or a special period.

Draft law No.5337 received votes of 239 Members of Parliament, while 226 votes enough for approval, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The draftspersons are Members of Parliament Serhii Pashinskyi and Tetiana Chornovol (People's Front), Ivan Vinnik and Iryna Friz (Petro Poroshenko Bloc).

The law permits the discharge of members of the military serving under contract during special period (except mobilisation and imposing martial law), whose contracts have expired but they have not expressed the wish to continue military service.

Full-time education students, post-graduate and doctoral students drafted to military service under mobilisation for the special period are to be discharged from services too.

Moreover, subject to discharge are also the military who concluded the contract for a period until the end of the special period or until announcement of the demobilisation decision, and have already served at least 24 months.

These persons can continue military service under a new contract if they want.

Such servicemen are to be discharged from military service (by the serviceman's wish) within the time frames and in the quantities determined by central bodies of executive power who carry out management of military formations according to law, not later than one year after the entry into force of the said law.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President Petro Poroshenko on September 27 vetoed the law allowing mobilised servicemen to conclude short-term contracts during special periods.
