US President Donald Trump made harsh remarks about Spain, calling the country a "terrible NATO partner," and verbally ordered a halt to trade with it.

“They don’t participate. They don’t pay. I don't want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please,” Trump said.
He claims that Spain “makes so much money off of us” and promised to “see that they make a lot less.”
“We don't have to trade with them. I don't want to do any more trade with them. All right. Take it immediately. Don't even talk to them. They're hopeless bad people,” Trump said.
The office of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez quickly responded to Trump’s comments, stating that they were treating them as “business as usual.” His office emphasized that Spain has strong “social, cultural, and economic ties” and has no intention of changing that.
According to new NATO data, Spain is one of several countries that do not meet the Alliance’s former target of spending 2% of GDP on defense. Spain had also previously denied the U.S. permission to use jointly operated military bases on its territory to launch an attack on Iran.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump announced back in March his decision to “sever all ties” with Spain after Madrid refused to allow the use of its military bases for strikes in the Middle East.
And last year, Trump stated that Spain should be expelled from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for refusing to spend 5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.
