One Ukrainian citizen is being evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius, where an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus occurred. Four other Ukrainians will remain on board as part of the crew and will ensure the ship’s safe passage to the Netherlands.
It was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement to hromadske.
According to the ship’s operator, no symptoms of the disease have been observed among the Ukrainian citizens on board.
Four Ukrainians, who are crew members, will remain on board, and upon the ship’s arrival in the Netherlands, they are scheduled to be sent to a medical facility for quarantine.
It is noted that officials from the Ukrainian Consulate are currently in contact with a fifth Ukrainian, who is to leave the ship as part of a partial evacuation of the crew via a special flight to the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the case is under special supervision by the Department of Consular Service, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Netherlands, the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain, and the Consulate of Ukraine in Malaga.
As a reminder, an outbreak of hantavirus occurred on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in fatalities. It was reported that the ship was initially denied permission to dock while nearly 150 people were still on board.
Spain has now agreed to accept the cruise ship MV Hondius, on which the hantavirus outbreak was detected. The ship will head to the Canary Islands. There are five Ukrainians on board the MV Hondius who have contracted hantavirus.
