Russian president vladimir putin has announced Moscow's readiness to take a radical step - to stop gas exports to Europe, without waiting for 2027, when the European Union plans to introduce a full energy embargo. This is reported by russian media.

According to russian media, the Kremlin leader considers it inappropriate to wait for official bans from Brussels.

Putin justifies such an initiative by the need to quickly move to new sales markets while there are still free niches there:

"They plan to introduce restrictions on the purchase of russian gas, including liquefied, in a month, and in a year, in 2027, new restrictions, up to a complete ban. And now other markets are opening. And, perhaps, it is more profitable for us to stop supplies to the European market right now. Go to those markets that are opening and gain a foothold there," the dictator said.

He clarified that this is not a final decision, but only a strategic discussion:

"This is not a decision yet, but thoughts out loud," putin said.

At the same time, he added that he had already instructed the russian government and energy companies to "work out this issue" in detail.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the European Union officially adopted a regulation on the gradual cessation of imports of russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas. A complete ban on imports will come into force in 2027.

On December 17, 2025, the European Parliament voted for a law on the refusal to import russian gas from 2027.

As we recall, earlier the European Union promised not to resume imports of russian gas in the event of a peace agreement being signed between Ukraine and the aggressor country of russia.
