Ukraine expects the deployment of foreign military contingents directly in the combat zone. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated this in a commentary for the BBC.
He noted that the allies should deploy their units closer to the front.
"Britain and France officially, when we signed our declaration with all the coalition participants, we understand that these two countries are already ready to provide a brigade, one brigade each. And there are also signals from some other states that are ready to strengthen Ukraine with their presence at the level of a contingent....We would like to see the contingent closer to the front line," Zelenskyy said.
At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine does not need the presence of foreign troops in rear cities, such as Polish units in Lviv.
Instead of being deployed in the rear, neighboring countries are expected to provide logistical support for aviation and air defense to shoot down enemy targets from their own territories.
"It would be better if Poland then had the opportunity to provide its logistics for aircraft and air defence. Finally, we would come to the question of when military air targets could be shot down from the territory of one or another neighbouring state if something happened. We are more interested in this. As for the contingent, of course, no one wants to stand on the front line. Of course, Ukrainians would like our partners to stand with us on the front line. I think that is logical," the head of state added.
We would like to remind you that Merz is ready to send troops to NATO countries bordering Ukraine.
