On the night of November 6, drones attacked the Kostroma Power Station in the city of Volgorechensk, Kostroma Oblast. This is one of the most powerful thermal power plants in russia, located 350 kilometers from moscow, according to Astra.
The explosions were reported by residents of Volgorechensk, who heard several powerful detonations and saw a fire play over the energy facility. Photos and videos from social networks confirm that the explosions occurred directly near the station.
Astra, an independent russian media outlet, clarifies that the Kostroma SDPP was the target of a drone attack. Regional governor Sergey Sitnikov said that "air defense forces repelled the drone attack" but admitted that "the explosions caused consequences on energy infrastructure facilities." At the same time, he said, power supply in the region "has not been disrupted."
The Kostroma GRES is the third largest thermal power plant in russia (approximately 3,600 MW). It consists of several power units with a capacity of 300-1200 MW, and its chimney, which is more than 320 meters high, is considered one of the tallest in Europe.
This attack was the latest in a series of attacks on russia's energy infrastructure. The day before, on November 5, drones hit energy facilities in the Vladimir Oblast and a thermal power plant in Oryol, and on November 4, Ukrainian drones attacked the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery. Earlier, on November 3, several districts of the Kursk Oblast were left without power after a strike on a power substation.
As a reminder, on the night of November 5, new attacks on energy facilities were recorded in russia - explosions were in the Vladimir and Orel Oblasts.
