EU needs to speed up arms deliveries to Ukraine — MEP

The EU has provided insufficient support to Ukraine. Now, European countries need not only to develop their own defense industry, but also to invest more in Ukraine’s defense sector, accelerate arms deliveries, and seize frozen Russian assets to transfer them to Ukraine, including for the procurement of weapons.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands and representative of the Volt party, Reinier van Lanschot.

"We have given Ukraine enough support so that it does not lose the war, but clearly not enough for it to win. And that is a huge mistake… There are several things I’m trying to promote in the European Parliament. The first is more direct investment in the Ukrainian defense industry. This is very important to me because I believe it will have a substantial and direct effect that will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s position. And we don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on this, because we can use frozen Russian assets", — the politician noted.

"When I was in Ukraine in April 2024, I tried to advocate for the full use of all frozen Russian assets and their direct transfer to Ukraine. This is €300 billion. This could be a decisive factor, because it is more than everything that has been provided so far. So, this is about direct investment in Ukraine’s defense industry. Secondly, about the seizure of Russian assets and their transfer to Ukraine. And thirdly, about accelerating (arms deliveries to Ukraine — ed.), because we must move faster", — the MEP summarized.

Earlier, Member of the European Parliament and former Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Riho Terras, stated that the EU is not doing its part and called for increased military assistance to Ukraine. In his opinion, the European Union is failing to meet its obligations in terms of military support for Ukraine — in financing, in the volume of assistance, and in the speed of its delivery — and this needs to change.
