President of Cyprus arrives in Kyiv for talks on eve of the country's presidency in EU Council in 2026
On December 4, President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Ukraine on a working visit. He is scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss, among other things, negotiations on the settlement of the war and EU-Ukraine relations in view of Cyprus' presidency of the EU Council in 2026.
Christodoulides has reported this on the social network X.
Yes, Christodoulides arrived in Kyiv as part of a working visit, which is part of the preparations for the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council in 2026. A personal meeting between the two leaders and extended talks between the delegations of both countries are planned.
"Cyprus is putting forward European priorities related to security, unity and strengthening our common political will. During this deeply symbolic visit, Cyprus expresses its full solidarity with the Ukrainian people in practice and conveys a message of unwavering commitment to the inviolable principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each state," the statement said.
It is emphasized that the peoples of Cyprus and Ukraine know the tragic consequences of invasion and occupation, the denial of freedom and territorial integrity.
Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus supports any sincere diplomatic efforts that can lead to a just and lasting peace, fully in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, in coordination with European and international partners.
"Under the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026, enlargement will be a top priority and Ukraine's path to the European family will be one of the most important issues on our agenda and we will consistently support its progress," Christodoulides said.
During the meeting of the presidents there will be they will discuss:
- bilateral relations and their further strengthening,
- information and exchange of views on international efforts to achieve a peace agreement in Ukraine,
- information on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and Cyprus' efforts to resume substantive negotiations on the basis of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and principles and values,
- EU-Ukraine relations and exchange of views in view of the Republic of Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, meanwhile, today, December 4, US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will meet with NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov in Miami to negotiate a peace plan to resolve the russian-Ukrainian war.
