"There is not enough time for detection." Air Forces explain features of russian missile attack on Kyiv
On the night of July 31, the aggressor state russia attacked Kyiv with cruise missiles of the Iskander-K type, which have a short flight time. The missiles were launched from the Kursk Oblast, and their flight took place at ultra-low altitudes, which made them hardly noticeable to air defense.
The head of the communications department of the Air Forces Command, Colonel Yurii Ihnat, stated this on the air of a telethon.
"There are missiles that are shot down with a higher efficiency indicator, there are with a lower one. As for the missiles that attacked the Kyiv Region today, they are ground-based cruise missiles, Iskander-K missiles. They are also some of the most popular missiles with which Russia is shelling," he explained.
Among other "most popular missiles," Ihnat named the Kh-101 and Kalibr. He noted that these missiles are the same in class, but there are peculiarities in their downing. The best indicators of downing cruise missiles are for the Kh-101 - more than 2,500 were launched and about 2,000 were hit by air defense. The next ones are the Kalibrs - more than half were shot down. Less than half of the Iskander-K missiles were shot down.
Ihnat noted that the Iskander-K missile is no less dangerous than the Iskander-M ballistic missile due to the fact that the approach time is short.
"This time, the missiles were launched from the Kursk Oblast, which is located very close to the city of Kyiv, which means there is quite little time for detection and response. Another feature that the Russians use is ultra-low altitudes. They use riverbeds, as always, the terrain, and the missile presses low to the ground and becomes quite invisible to our air defenses. Thus, this is not the first time the enemy has used these missiles, and today only three out of eight were hit," Ihnat reported.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, among other things, the russian strike on the night of Thursday, July 31, damaged the Islamic Cultural Center in Kyiv, as well as the territory of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio.
