Starmer says he is ready to send British troops to Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his readiness to deploy British troops to Ukraine to ensure the implementation of a future peace agreement.
This is reported by The Telegraph.
"I do not say that lightly. I feel very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way," Starmer said, emphasizing that London is ready to play a leading role in ensuring the security of Ukraine.
This is the first time that the British Prime Minister has publicly acknowledged the possibility of sending a peacekeeping mission.
Starmer arrived in Paris for an emergency summit of European leaders convened by French President Emmanuel Macron. The publication notes that the British Prime Minister's decision may put pressure on Germany and other countries to support the idea of sending European peacekeepers to Ukraine.
He also stressed the special role of the UK as a link between Europe and the US in the peace process. "But any role in helping to guarantee Ukraine’s security is helping to guarantee the security of our continent and the security of this country," Starmer said.
According to The Telegraph, his statement is partly related to signals from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump during the Munich conference. American officials made it clear that European countries should strengthen their own security.
"The end of this war, when it comes, cannot merely become a temporary pause before Putin attacks again," Starmer stressed.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Macron is calling European leaders to an urgent summit in Paris.
Earlier, U.S. President's special envoy for russia and Ukraine Keith Kellogg said that Europe is unlikely to have a place at the negotiating table regarding russia's war against Ukraine.
And China said that Europe should become a participant in negotiations to end the war, as it is of crucial importance.
