International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists: at least 102 journalists killed due to russian war
Today, November 2, is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, established by a 2013 UN General Assembly resolution. During the full-scale invasion of the russian federation into the territory of Ukraine, at least 102 media workers were killed by russia.
This is evidenced by the data of the International Federation of Journalists and the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.
Thus, according to the data of the organizations as of September 29, 2024, among those who were killed during the russian war in Ukraine were 18 media men and women, who performed professional duties; 9 media men and women - civilian victims; 75 representatives of mass media, who mobilized for the defense of Ukraine in the ranks of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
The statistics include Ukrainian journalists and foreign media representatives, who came to Ukraine to cover events, who were killed while performing their professional duties, became victims of shelling by the russian army, or were killed as military personnel.
In addition, the Institute of Mass Information reported that as of October 18, 2024, there are at least 29 civilian Ukrainian media workers and two combatant journalists, including a number of Crimean Tatar journalists, in russian captivity.
Among the killed are employees of such media as Reuters, AFP, The Insider, Fox News, The New York Times, BFMTV, LIVE, LB.ua, Hromadske, Hromada Pryirpinnia, Dom, Radio Svoboda, Suspilne and many others.
In particular, the 38-year-old security adviser of the British Reuters news agency Ryan Evans was killed as a result of a russian missile attack on Kramatorsk overnight into August 25.
On May 29, a 25-year-old paramedic of the Hospitallers volunteer battalion Iryna Tsybukh with the call sign "Cheka" was killed during a rotation in the Kharkiv Axis. In civilian life, Iryna Tsybukh worked in mass media. She was a journalist in the magazine Kraina, on Hromadske radio, later held the position of manager at Suspilne.
In April, it became known that Alla Pushkarchuk (Ruta), a military servicewoman and journalist of Tyzhden and Chytomo was killed at the front.
TV presenter and editor Petro Tsurukin was killed, but his fate was unknown for a long time. Confirmation of his death appeared in March. He was known as the chief editor of the "One for All" project on the STB TV channel and the host of the KYIV LIVE TV channel.
In 2023, the journalist of the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) Arman Soldin was killed near Bakhmut of the Donetsk Region as a result of shelling by the russian occupation army.
