Ukraine has passed its presidency in the United Nations Security Council to the United Kingdom.

During Ukraine's presidency in February 2017 the UN Security Council held an extraordinary meeting on February 2 to tackle the aggravation of the situation in Avdiivka, Donetsk region. During the extraordinary meeting the Russian Federation was condemned for its aggression in Donbas and the occupation of Crimea. It was also highlighted during the extraordinary meeting that the sanctions against Russia should be extended until Russia returns the peninsular to Ukraine.

On February 13, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution initiated by Ukraine on protection of facilities of critical infrastructure from terrorist attacks. On February 21, there were open debates initiated by Ukraine on the issues of conflicts in Europe.

Ukraine's representative in the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko noted that the issues of conflicts in Europe had not been raised in the frames of the UN Security Council for some 20 years. The issue was important to Ukraine in the context of the situation in Donbas.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko assesses Ukraine's presidency in the UN Security Council as a success. In his opinion Ukraine managed to attract the UN Security Council to active resolution of problems of peace and security in Europe.

The United Kingdom assumed the presidency in the UN Security Council on March 1.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that Ukraine's presidency in the UN Security Council would consolidate faith in Ukraine.

On 1 January 2016, Ukraine became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2016-2017.
