Trump promises support for Ukraine in exchange for Europe's cooperation on Iran - Politico
At the G7 summit, US President Donald Trump stated his willingness to support Ukraine in stepping up pressure on russia, provided that European allies join the US in its efforts regarding Iran and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Politico reported this, citing European diplomats.
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leaders, the US side confirmed its intention to reinstate sanctions against the russian oil sector. At the same time, according to sources, closed-door talks focused on linking further decisions regarding russia to Europe’s participation in ensuring stability in the region surrounding Iran.
In coordination discussions, European leaders expressed their readiness to join relevant measures, provided that actions are coordinated among all parties to the negotiation process. Among them is French President Emmanuel Macron.
The summit is taking place in Évian-les-Bains, France, from June 15 to 17. Separately, the G7’s final documents mention the possibility of granting Ukraine licenses to produce interceptor missiles and other weapons.
As a reminder, the leaders of the G7 countries announced their intention to strengthen military support for Ukraine and impose additional sanctions against russia. This decision is included in the G7’s joint communiqué.
