Rubio conveys message from Lavrov to Trump and declares US readiness for mediation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded to russia’s massive strikes and threats of new attacks on Kyiv, confirming Washington’s readiness to mediate. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alex Raufoglu has reported this on X.
The head of the State Department confirmed a phone call with russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which took place at the initiative of the russian side, and noted that he had already forwarded the information received to the US president.
“Rubio just told reporters that Lavrov had conveyed a message from Putin intended for Trump, which Rubio said he relayed,” Alex Raufoglu wrote.
The Secretary of State also downplayed the significance of official statements from the russian Foreign Ministry, in which Lavrov called on foreign states to urgently evacuate their diplomatic personnel from Kyiv due to the kremlin’s plans to launch systematic strikes on the Ukrainian capital. According to the US official, moscow merely repeated a general warning that had previously been sent to all foreign diplomatic missions in Ukraine, and Lavrov contacted him to convey this personally at putin’s request.
Commenting on the latest large-scale attacks by russia, particularly the recent massive strike on Kyiv, the Secretary of State emphasized the need to end hostilities as soon as possible.
"Every time you see these big strikes from one side or the other, it's a reminder of why this is a terrible war that's now gone on longer than the Second World War, and it needs to come to an end. And the U.S. stands ready and prepared to help do whatever we can to help facilitate the end of this war and hopefully the opportunity will present itself at some point that we can play that role again," Marco Rubio stated during a conversation with journalists in India.
Currently, the State Department’s schedule does not include any set dates for launching the negotiation process, but Washington remains fully prepared to mediate.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 25, Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of the aggressor state russia, informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of moscow’s decision to launch strikes on Kyiv.
