Stubb says he is ready to mediate on behalf of EU in talks with russia
Finnish President Alexander Stubb is prepared to serve as the European Union’s representative in potential negotiations with the russian federation if he receives a request to that effect from European partners. The Finnish leader made this statement in comments to the Finnish media Yle.
The Finnish president’s statement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized in May the need to appoint a single representative from Europe for future negotiations with moscow.
"If I am asked, then I suppose this is not something one can say no to," Alexander Stubb noted.
At the same time, Stubb clearly outlined the main condition for starting any dialogue: discussions on a peaceful resolution of the war can only begin after russia agrees to a complete ceasefire. According to him, halting hostilities must be the first and key step.
According to Politico, Alexander Stubb is currently one of the leading contenders for the role of EU representative in potential negotiations to end the russian-Ukrainian war.
In addition to the current President of Finland, well-known European politicians are being considered as likely candidates, including Angela Merkel—the former Chancellor of Germany—and Mario Draghi—the former Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Central Bank.
The intensified search for a joint EU spokesperson is linked to a shift in Washington’s geopolitical priorities. According to Politico, the administration of US President Donald Trump is currently more focused on the situation surrounding the war in Iran, which is forcing Brussels to take a greater initiative on European security issues.
Despite the Finnish leader’s strong chances and personal interest in the role of mediator, his candidacy requires official consensus support from EU member states for approval.
In addition, analysts note that moscow may block or view Stubb’s candidacy critically due to Finland’s recent accession to NATO and its firm Euro-Atlantic stance.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the German publication Spiegel previously revealed that the name of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come up in discussions regarding potential European Union negotiators with russia for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
