Since the beginning of the year, at least 35 crude oil primary processing units at russian refineries have been put out of commission as a result of Ukrainian strikes. Reuters reported this on Friday, May 15.

According to Reuters’ calculations, from January through May, the Ukrainian military struck 16 oil refineries, some of which were hit multiple times. As a result of the strikes, approximately 700,000 barrels per day of refining capacity were taken out of service.

In March, the capacity of damaged primary refining facilities reached nearly 1 million barrels per day and exceeded that level again in April.

In total, since January, 35 primary refining facilities have been taken out of service due to damage caused by drones or related disruptions.

For comparison: from January to May 2025, 12 facilities were taken offline, with a total capacity of 1.3 million barrels per day.

According to industry sources, taking into account repeated strikes this year, more than 40 shutdowns of major facilities related to external influences have been recorded.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, overnight on May 15, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil refinery in the Ryazan Oblast—one of the largest in russia. The attack triggered a massive fire at the facility.

It was also reported today that the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery in the Leningrad Oblast of the russian federation has not resumed operations since May 5, when it was attacked by drones.
