The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has released the results of a comprehensive study of russia’s Kh-101 strategic cruise missiles. According to military engineers, since 2022, the enemy has carried out at least four major upgrades in an attempt to counter the high effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense, which, as of May 2026, has shot down approximately 88% of such targets. It was reported by the ministry’s press service.

Four stages of "improvement"

Analysis of markings on downed missiles shows that russia no longer has a strategic stockpile of Kh-101s. Final assembly of the missiles takes place 1–2 weeks before launch.

In addition to the shortage of missiles themselves, the enemy has faced the depletion of its Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft. Due to critical engine wear, the bombers are now forced to carry only two missiles instead of the standard six to eight. This directly reduces the overall potential of russia’s nuclear triad, as these same aircraft serve as carriers of strategic nuclear weapons.

"Ukraine’s goal is to identify 100% of threats and intercept at least 95% of missiles and drones," emphasized Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Studying the remains of enemy weaponry allows Ukrainian specialists to quickly update air defense algorithms and find countermeasures for every new "trick" of the occupiers.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the warhead of a russian Kh-101 missile was found in Kyiv.
