Russia plans to ask for another ceasefire in late May

The russian side intends to appeal to Ukraine with a proposal to introduce another ceasefire in the last decade of May. According to Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom state corporation, the need for a "silence regime" is due to technical needs, namely the restoration of the Dniprovska high-voltage power line, which is critically important for providing power to the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This is reported by The Moscow Times.

In his comments, Likhachev explained that the implementation of these plans is directly related to natural factors.

"I really hope that - taking into account the floods and high water of the Dnieper, we need a certain level of water to solve the problems of electricity supply - we will plan a quiet regime for the third decade of May," the head of Rosatom said.

Thus, the timing of the proposed truce depends on the water level in the Dnieper, which is necessary for the safe conduct of complex repair work.

At the moment, the question of the format of such an initiative remains open. The statements of the russian side do not specify whether this is a complete cessation of hostilities on the entire front line or only a local lull in a specific area in the Zaporizhzhia NPP area. Previously, Ukraine and russia, through the mediation of the IAEA, have repeatedly implemented short-term ceasefire regimes around the station to carry out urgent repairs to lines that ensure the safety of the nuclear facility.

Recall that on April 29, US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with russian dictator vladimir putin and stated that an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is close. He also said that he had offered the Kremlin leader a "short ceasefire."
