IAEA Head arrives in Kyiv on anniversary of Chornobyl disaster
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The head of state announced this on his Facebook page on Sunday, April 26.
Zelenskyy discussed with Grossi the russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the legalization of which by the invaders is unacceptable.
"We discussed temporary shutdowns of nuclear power plant units, reductions in their output, and the potential consequences of these criminal actions. For safe operation, the plant must be returned to the management of Ukraine’s licensed operator and nuclear regulator. We agreed to continue IAEA missions to ensure continuous monitoring of the plant’s condition," the President emphasized.
In addition, Zelenskyy and the IAEA Director General took part in the opening of a new permanent exhibition the National Chornobyl Museum: “Chornobyl: People and Meanings.”
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, April 26, 2026, marks the 40th anniversary of the disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
