Trump lashes out at Leo XIV over his stance on Iran and says he doesn't want that kind of pope
US President Donald Trump said he doesn't want that kind of pope, criticizing Pope Leo XIV for his position on the war in Iran.
He wrote about this on his social network Truth Social.
Trump accused Pope Leo XIV of a weak response to crime and ineffective foreign policy. He also noted that he is more impressed with the pontiff's brother Louis Prevost, as he supports the MAGA movement.
In his post, the US president said that he does not support the Pope's position on Iran and its nuclear program, and also criticized the pontiff's assessment of US actions in Venezuela. According to Trump, he does not accept criticism of his address, as he is acting in accordance with the mandate received in the elections.
Trump also expressed the opinion that the election of Pope Leo XIV was due to his American origin and an attempt to influence the US president. He added that without his tenure as president, Leo XIV would not have led the Vatican.
According to the Guardian, these statements come after the Pope spoke over the weekend of a "delusion of omnipotence" as a factor fueling the war in Iran.
On the same day, Pope Leo XIV held vespers at St. Peter's Basilica as direct talks between the United States and Iran began in Pakistan. According to the newspaper, the pontiff did not mention the United States or Trump directly, but his message was directed at representatives of the American authorities who publicly justified military action.
The talks between the United States and Iran in Pakistan lasted 21 hours and ended without reaching an agreement. US Vice President J.D. Vance said that Tehran had rejected Washington's demand to abandon the development of nuclear weapons.
