The European Union has officially adopted a regulation on the gradual cessation of imports of russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas. A complete ban on imports will come into force in 2027.

The press service of the EU Council announced this on Monday, January 26.

"Today, 27 EU member states have officially adopted a regulation on the gradual cessation of imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU," the statement said.

The ban on imports of russian gas will take effect six weeks after the regulation comes into force. A transition period is provided for existing contracts. The phased approach will limit the impact on prices and markets. The full ban will come into effect in early 2027 for pipeline gas and in the fall of 2027 for LNG.

It is also reported that in the future, the EU will check the country where the gas was produced before allowing imports.

The EU Council called the adoption of the regulation an important milestone in achieving the goal of the REPowerEU program, which aims to end the bloc's dependence on russian energy.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 17, 2025, the European Parliament voted in favor of a law to stop importing russian gas from 2027.

As a reminder, earlier the European Union promised not to resume russian gas imports in case of signing a peace agreement between Ukraine and the aggressor country russia.
