No sign of compromise between russia and Ukraine at talks in UAE - Reuters
There are currently no signs of softening positions on territorial issues between Ukraine and russia at talks in Abu Dhabi, Reuters reported on Friday, January 23.
Ukrainian and russian negotiators will discuss the issue of territory during two days of talks in Abu Dhabi, but there will be no signs of softening their positions on ending the four-year war, the publication writes. At the same time, US pressure on Ukraine is growing to reach a peace deal that would give Moscow all of Donbas.
"Russian president vladimir putin's demand that Ukraine give up 20% of the Donetsk Region in Donbas - about 5,000 sq km - has become a serious obstacle to a breakthrough agreement. Zelenskyy is not willing to give up the lands that russia has failed to seize in four years of grueling war," the material says.
A source close to the Kremlin told Reuters that Moscow believes the so-called "Anchorage formula", allegedly agreed between Trump and putin in August in Alaska, means russian control over the entire Donbas and freezing the current front lines in other parts of eastern and southern Ukraine. Russia continues to say that it allegedly seeks a diplomatic solution, but will continue to achieve its goals by military means as long as a negotiated solution remains unattainable, Reuters notes.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 23, the Kremlin announced the holding of talks involving russia, the United States and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi, while directly declaring its intention to continue the war against Ukraine.
On January 22, US President Donald Trump said that his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was "very good" and added that "everyone wants the war to end".
On January 22, Zelenskyy also reported a good meeting with US President Donald Trump in Davos (Switzerland).
