Iran threatens Trump with strike on US bases in Middle East if it interferes in protests
American military facilities in the Middle East will be targeted by Iran if the United States intervenes in the protests in the republic, parliamentary spokesman Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said.
This was his response to Donald Trump's words about his readiness to come to the aid of Iranian demonstrators, among whom seven people have already been killed.
"The irreverent US president should know that after this official recognition, all US bases and armed forces in the region will be our legitimate target in response to any possible adventure," Galibaf wrote.
The day before, Trump said that the United States would respond if Iranian authorities "kill peaceful protesters."
"We are ready to act and we are on full alert," he emphasized.
After that, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani accused the United States and Israel of inciting the protests and warned Trump against interfering in the internal affairs of the republic, saying that this would lead to chaos throughout the region and harm the interests of the Americans themselves.
In turn, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's political advisor Ali Shamkhani warned that "any intervention aimed at undermining Iran's security will be met with retaliation."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, protests in Iran began on December 28 amid the economic crisis. Back then, shopkeepers took to the streets of a number of cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Mashhad, outraged by another drop in the national currency.
On that day, the Iranian rial weakened to a record low of about 1.4 million to the US dollar, which led to a price spike.
