Rubio says Washington will talk about security guarantees only after peace deal - Politico
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed European allies that the United States insists on the need to conclude a "peace deal" in Ukraine, and only then will it be ready to consider providing any security guarantees to Kyiv. This is reported by Politico, citing sources.
The condition of the United States on the need to conclude a "peace deal" before providing any security guarantees to Ukraine was a key proposal from Washington. As the interlocutor of the publication reported, this requirement was the main point that the American delegation brought to Kyiv last week.
"Ukrainian leaders see Western security guarantees as the basis for any possible deal with russia, even as NATO members struggle to figure out how to support the war-torn country with military aid and intelligence. Rubio said in a phone call with European officials that U.S. President Donald Trump would later negotiate long-term security guarantees for Ukraine that would supposedly guarantee Kyiv's security," the publication said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the inclusion of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in talks in Geneva on a so-called "peace plan" to resolve the russian-Ukrainian war has significantly influenced the course of the discussions.
The U.S. has presented an updated package of proposals for resolving the situation in Ukraine and announced significant progress in the talks in Geneva.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin claims that Moscow has not received any data on the talks between the United States, Ukraine and European countries that took place in Geneva.
