US Congress will adopt sanctions against russia only with Trump's consent - Speaker Johnson

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said that new sanctions against russia will not be adopted without the consent of President Donald Trump. At the same time, he emphasized that the need for such steps has been long overdue.

He said this in an interview with CBS News.

According to the politician, there is "great interest" in Congress to increase pressure on Moscow. He emphasized that he is ready to cooperate with the White House and the Senate to ensure that decisions are made.

"I really believe that desperate times call for desperate measures. I think sanctions against russia are long overdue, there is great interest in Congress in this. So we are ready to work with the White House and our colleagues from the Senate in the House of Representatives to make this happen. I personally really want to do this," Johnson said.

At the same time, he emphasized that Congress cannot act alone: ​​"The President will have to sign everything we do and approve it as law. It should be a partnership, but we obey the Commander-in-Chief."
