West develops three-tiered system of protection for Ukraine - Financial Times

Western countries are preparing a three-tiered security plan for Ukraine after the end of the war with russia. The Financial Times reported this, citing sources.

The first stage involves the creation of a demilitarized zone, which can be patrolled by neutral peacekeeping forces from a state agreed upon by both Kyiv and Moscow.

"A much more reliable border behind it will be defended by Ukrainian troops, armed and trained by NATO troops," three officials told the publication.

The second line of defense should be a European-led deterrent force located deeper in Ukraine. The third level is to support these forces with American resources from the rear.

At the same time, the newspaper notes that even with potential US support, the public and politicians in many European countries express concern about the possible deployment of troops in Ukraine.

Head of the Presidential Office Andrii Yermak explained that each country in the coalition will make its contribution, "and in the end the picture will be a combination of military, political and economic support."

According to him, the discussions concerned four to five European brigades that are to operate on the territory of Ukraine, as well as "strategic resources" from the United States. Yermak emphasized that this means "a big change since the spring."

"Indeed, the last meeting at the White House was a breakthrough in a number of things, brought clarity to such steps as the formation of a system of security guarantees and the supply of American weapons for the defense of Ukraine through European financial instruments," the head of the Office noted.

He added that the United States "can provide the basis that will make the entire security and deterrence architecture work."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President's Special Envoy Witkoff announced a meeting with representatives of Ukraine. It will take place this week in New York. Yermak and Umerov will go to meet with Witkoff in New York. Bloomberg wrote about what they will talk about.

Recall, on August 22, US President Trump said that in two weeks he would know where to go regarding the war between russia and Ukraine.

Also on August 22, Politico wrote, citing its own sources, that Trump believes that Ukraine will be forced to accept russia's conditions to end the war.
