Sweden and Ukraine to develop space technologies for defense

Sweden is expanding defense cooperation with Ukraine, in particular in the field of space technology development. The relevant agreements were discussed during negotiations between the Ukrainian and Swedish delegations at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the press service of the department reports.

It is noted that the Ukrainian side presented the main achievements in the digitalization of the defense sector, an important part of which is the implementation of space policy and strategy. In particular, representatives of the Ministry of Defense spoke about the creation of the Space Policy Department in March 2025.

Also during the meeting, the key needs of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in this area were voiced, which can be implemented in cooperation with international partners.

"We have a great heritage in the space sector, which we are modernizing and relaunching taking into account modern requirements. We are also attracting foreign partners who have greater experience and capabilities in the field of military space. We are ready to share our own developments obtained during combat operations," said Oleksandr Havrutenko, Head of the Space Policy Department in the Defense Sector.

He clarified that in the military space sector, Ukraine is not focusing on scaling its own equipment, but on processing large volumes of data, in particular those received from international partners.

"Space is an important space for our Defense Forces. Satellites will give us constant communication for the military, our own capabilities for intelligence data, and the opportunity to save the lives of our people thanks to early warnings about threats," said Kateryna Chernohorenko, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine for Digitalization.

The head of the Swedish delegation, Brigadier General Lars Helmrich, emphasized that Sweden is interested in cooperation with Ukraine, taking into account its unique experience in modern warfare. In addition, Sweden can contribute to expanding Ukraine's interaction with other Nordic partners - Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland.
