Britain to build 12 submarines and invest billions in weapons production because of russia - Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to bring his country to combat readiness by building new submarines and investing in weapons, including nuclear ones.

According to The New York Times, Starmer said this while speaking at a company in Glasgow on Monday, June 2.

"I believe that the best way to prevent conflict is to prepare for it <...> The threat we face now is more serious, more immediate and more unpredictable than at any time since the Cold War," the British Prime Minister said.

The ambitious plan to rearm the British army appeared against the backdrop of the ongoing war of the aggressor country of russia against Ukraine, the gradual withdrawal of the United States from Europe and growing global tensions.

According to Starmer, the government intends to invest money in the construction of new attack submarines. As part of the rearmament plan, the British navy may receive up to 12 such ships.

It is planned to invest billions of pounds sterling in the production of new weapons, the development of digital technologies and the modernization of the country's nuclear arsenal.

In addition, the government wants to allocate about GBP 1.5 billion to modernize military infrastructure. This is about improving the conditions of servicemen, which should be an incentive for the British to join the armed forces, the number of which has decreased to a critically low level.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 31, The Guardian wrote that the British government was presented with a 130-page document that talks about an imminent threat from russia.

Recall, in mid-May it became known that the British military had come up with a way to detect russian submarines using drones and artificial intelligence.

And in April, The Times reported that the British company BAE Systems is preparing to increase the production of artillery shells 16 times.
