We should not expect complete surrender of russia with its nuclear weapons - German Foreign Ministry
Germany believes that the war of the russian federation against Ukraine will end with negotiations. But Berlin is convinced that a complete defeat of russia with its nuclear weapons should not be expected.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has stated this, as quoted by DW.
"In my opinion, it was clear from the very beginning that this war would most likely end through negotiations. One thing is certain - a complete defeat in the sense of the surrender of Russia with its nuclear weapons was not to be expected. We have now become a little more honest in this regard," he said.
According to the head of the Foreign Ministry, Germany does not believe that the goal of ending the war of the russian federation against Ukraine should be the military defeat of moscow. Germany sets itself the goal of ensuring that Ukraine can defend itself from further russian aggression.
Johann Wadephul stated that Ukraine has the opportunity to be in a strong negotiating position during negotiations with the russian federation on ending the war.
"It is important for us that Ukraine makes this decision, and not that others make it through its head," the Minister stressed.
The German Foreign Minister also expressed confidence that the US will support EU pressure on moscow through sanctions. The Minister added that the issue of future US aid to Ukraine remains open, and this should push the EU to new actions.
However, Johann Wadephul warned against overestimating the power of the russian "war machine."
"After all, it has spent three years trying to achieve the goal that Putin wanted to achieve in just a few days," he said.
