There is window of opportunity in Istanbul to "resolve conflict" in Ukraine” – NATO Secretary General
The peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey, have an opportunity to improve the situation in Ukraine and "resolve the conflict," NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday, May 14.
Rutte noted the role of Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in holding peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, a "window of opportunity" has now appeared to improve the situation in Ukraine.
"I think there is this window of opportunity this week, but also in the next 10 days, two weeks, to really bring the whole issue of Ukraine to a better place. Under the leadership, of course, of President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy, but also very much steered by the American government. And Türkiye plays a big role here,” Rutte told Anadolu, referring to Istanbul peace talks.
However, the NATO Secretary General emphasized that the aggressor country russia continues to produce as much ammunition in three months as the entire Alliance does in a year, although NATO is 25 times more powerful than the russian federation in terms of economic power.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 12, US President Donald Trump admitted that he may visit Turkey on May 15 to participate in possible negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and russian dictator vladimir putin.
On May 13, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podoliak said that Zelenskyy would negotiate exclusively with putin.
On May 14, Zelenskyy said that he intended to discuss with putin the issue of a ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners in an "all-for-all" format.
