Trump confirms he is ready to join talks in Turkey, but unsure about putin
US President Donald Trump confirmed he is still considering attending talks on the Ukraine war scheduled for Thursday in Turkey, but he does not know if russian leader vladimir putin will attend.
This is reported by Reuters.
"He'd like me to be there, and that's a possibility. ... I don't know that he would be there if I'm not there. We're going to find out," Trump said while traveling aboard Air Force One en route to Qatar.
Trump said he could visit Turkey for talks as part of his trip to the Middle East this week. He referred to his next stop in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.
"We have a very full situation. Now that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do it to save a lot of lives and come back," Trump said, according to the Washington Post.
At the same time, Trump noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be present at the talks in Istanbul on Thursday.
As a reminder, on May 11, russian dictator vladimir putin publicly stated that russia was allegedly ready for bilateral talks with Ukraine. He proposed holding them in Turkey this Thursday, May 15.
Zelenskyy said that he would personally wait for putin for bilateral talks.
In addition, Trump admitted that he may visit Turkey on May 15 to participate in the talks between Zelenskyy and putin.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post, citing sources, states that russia will send Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and russian President's Assistant for Foreign Policy Yuri Ushakov to the planned peace talks in Turkey. The arrival of vladimir putin himself is currently considered unlikely.
