Gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities lowest in last 11 years - 6 billion cubic meters
Natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) exceeded 6 billion cubic meters on May 11.
The ExPro Daily Gas publication has informed about this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
The report states that almost 6.02 billion cubic meters of natural gas were stored in the storage facilities, and the storage facilities are 19.4% full.
Compared to last year, 31.7% or 2.79 billion cubic meters less gas is stored in the storage facilities. This year's reserves in the storage facilities are the lowest as of May 11 for at least the last 11 years.
Active gas reserves in underground storage facilities amount to almost 1.28 billion cubic meters.
This volume can be withdrawn by customers of storage services.
It is noted that Ukraine continues to pump gas into underground storage facilities, and the injection volumes decreased to 26 million cubic meters on May 11.
The injection volumes in May 2025 are higher than in May last year.
In general, more than 350 million cubic meters of natural gas have been pumped into storage facilities since the beginning of the month, 33% more than in the same period last year.
Since the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), 610 million cubic meters of natural gas have been pumped into Ukrainian underground storage facilities, including 258 million cubic meters in April.
This year's injection season began later than in 2024 (March 31), which is due to colder weather in the first half of April.
According to ExPro estimates, by the end of May 2025, gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities could reach almost 6.6 billion cubic meters with stable natural gas imports, which have been around 14 million cubic meters per day in recent days.
In addition, Ukraine continues to gradually restore natural gas production, which was damaged after massive russian shelling in February-March.
Ukraine continues to actively prepare for the next heating season.
At the beginning of November 2024, gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities amounted to 12.92 billion cubic meters. To achieve similar volumes this year, Ukraine needs to pump 6.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas into storage facilities in June-October.
Part of these volumes will be covered by domestic production, but about 3-3.5 billion cubic meters will need to be imported in June-October 2025.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, during April 2025, Ukraine pumped 258 million cubic meters of natural gas into underground gas storage facilities (UGS), according to ExPro calculations.
Natural gas imports to Ukraine as of May 5 since the beginning of 2025 amounted to 1.12 billion cubic meters.
