It would be better if US did not make concessions before talks – German Defense Minister

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said it would be better if the U.S. did not make concessions before talks began, amid a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and russian leader vladimir putin.

He also added that Europe should participate in any negotiations.

He said this during a conversation with the press, The Guardian reports.

Thus, Pistorius stressed that if putin is serious about peace talks - and the German Defense Minister says there are doubts about this - he should show it by suspending attacks on Ukraine.

He also said that Europe should participate in any negotiations, especially if Trump expects European allies to play a peacekeeping role in any future agreement, as proposed by the new U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

He added that, frankly, it would be better if the U.S. did not make concessions to russia before the talks began, pointing to the issue of Ukraine's NATO membership or any territorial losses.

He said a quick peace deal would not necessarily resolve all concerns about russia's increasingly assertive policy in the region, as he warned that Europeans would not be able to simply "sit back and relax."

Pistorius also cautioned against over-eagerly reacting to the announcement of peace talks, saying Putin continued to provoke Europe and remained a threat.

He also said that while he accepted the harsh geopolitical realities that Hegseth had spoken about, he specifically warned him against a U.S. withdrawal from Europe.

Pistorius was also asked about who should represent Europe in any negotiations, and he raised the idea of Germany's participation, but said that it was for others to decide - but insisted that a European voice should be at the negotiating table.

Recall that Donald Trump had a phone conversation with russian dictator vladimir putin. He described it as "very productive".

Zelenskyy then had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump
