US transfers missiles for Patriot air defense system from Israel to Poland, they will be transferred to Ukraine — Axios
The U.S. has begun transferring missiles for the MIM-104 Patriot anti-aircraft missile system from Israel to Poland. Later, they will be transferred to Ukraine.
The Axios publication wrote about this with reference to sources.
These are missiles that were used by Patriot complexes that were in service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The publication recalled that in the spring of 2024, the Israeli army decommissioned these air defense systems.
Unnamed interlocutors of Axios told that when Israel decommissioned the Patriot complexes, Ukraine approached it with a proposal to send unused missiles to the U.S. There they were to be repaired, and later transferred to Ukraine.
The publication's sources added that for several months the Israeli authorities did not respond to Ukraine's offer. Jerusalem allegedly feared that in response, the aggressor country russia might transfer modern weapons to Iran.
However, at the end of September 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the transfer of missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine.
Axios sources claim that the day before, American transport planes delivered about 90 anti-aircraft missiles to Poland.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 14, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius howled that Berlin would soon deploy Patriot air defense systems in Poland. It would cover the airport in Rzeszow, through which most of the military aid to Ukraine passes.
Recall that on January 10, in a telephone conversation with former U.S. President Joseph Biden, Volodymyr Zelenskyy hinted to him that Ukraine needed additional Patriot air defense systems.
We also wrote that in October 2024, Romania confirmed that Kyiv had received a Patriot air defense system from Bucharest. Romania donated this complex to Ukraine.
