Trump developing oil sanctions to force russia to make peace – Bloomberg

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is developing a broad sanctions strategy to achieve a diplomatic agreement between aggressor russia and Ukraine in the coming months, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, January 16.

The publication writes that the Trump team is considering two main approaches to tightening sanctions. The first involves encouraging some russian oil producers that could influence the achievement of a peace agreement. The second option is to strengthen sanctions and increase pressure.

"For the Trump team, a more-aggressive Russian policy mix could entail greater enforcement of secondary sanctions on oil trading, penalizing European shippers as well as Asian buyers, including major entities in China and India, the people said. Another possible approach: Pushing for more assertive interventions on tankers moving Russia’s oil through the vital Danish and Turkish chokepoints,” the material says.

According to the sources, the Trump team's plans are currently in the early stages of development and will depend on the U.S. President-elect himself. The prospect of peace talks is fueled by Trump's announcement that he plans to meet with russian dictator vladimir putin, Bloomberg notes.
