Peace talks on Ukraine could start by yearend - Polish PM
Peace talks on the war in Ukraine could start by end of December 2024, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
His words were quoted by Reuters on Tuesday, December 10.
Tusk stressed that Poland had been one of the most determined supporters of Ukraine after the invasion by aggressor russia. According to him, Warsaw would continue to take an active part in any talks on Ukraine when it takes over the EU presidency on January 1.
"As you can imagine, our delegation will be co-responsible, among other things, for what the political calendar will look like, perhaps what the situation will be during the talks, which could, although there is still a question mark, start this winter," Tusk said.
The Polish Prime Minister noted that he has meetings planned on the situation on the eastern border, that he is in constant contact with Warsaw's Scandinavian and Baltic allies. On Thursday, December 12, French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Poland to report on talks with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris last weekend.
"I really want Poland to be the country that will not only be present, but also set the tone for these decisions that should bring us security and protect Polish interests," Tusk stressed.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 3, Tusk said that he "expects landmark events" regarding the war and peace in Ukraine.
On November 30, Tusk announced that Poland will build the Eastern Shield fortifications on the border with Ukraine.
On December 9, Tusk said that the fall of the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad showed that the aggressor country russia can be defeated.
